Nu Quantum Raises £2.1M to Pioneer Quantum Photonics Innovation

Cambridge-based quantum photonics startup Nu Quantum has secured £2.1 million in seed funding to accelerate the development of cutting-edge quantum technologies. The investment round was led by Amadeus Capital Partners, with participation from Ahren Innovation Capital, IQ Capital, Cambridge Enterprise, Martlet Capital, and new investor Seraphim Capital.

Fueling Quantum Technology Development

The funding will support two key initiatives:

  • Establishment of a state-of-the-art photonics laboratory in Cambridge
  • Expansion of Nu Quantum’s team with top scientific, product, and business talent

This investment follows a £650,000 pre-seed round in September 2019, also led by Amadeus Capital Partners.

Bridging Quantum Research and Commercial Applications

Spun out from the University of Cambridge after eight years of research at the prestigious Cavendish Laboratory, Nu Quantum combines expertise in:

  • Quantum optics
  • Semiconductor photonics
  • Information theory

The company is developing critical components that operate at the single-photon level under ambient conditions - a fundamental requirement for practical quantum cryptography and simulation systems.

First Commercial Product: Quantum Random Number Generation

Nu Quantum’s initial commercial offering focuses on quantum random number generation (QRNG), leveraging:

  • Proprietary quantum photonic technology
  • Advanced algorithms
  • Quantum-level effects

This technology provides unparalleled security for cryptographic keys, addressing a critical need in data protection. Nu Quantum is collaborating with the National Physical Laboratory as part of a £2.8 million government-funded project to establish UK standards for QRNG.

Leadership Perspectives

Dr. Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, CEO of Nu Quantum, emphasized: “This funding enables us to assemble a world-class team and establish laboratories that will deliver tangible demonstrations of our quantum photonics technology to partners and customers.”

Alex van Someren, Managing Partner at Amadeus Capital Partners, commented: “We’re doubling down on our investment because we believe in Nu Quantum’s potential to transform cybersecurity through quantum photonics. Cambridge continues to lead in commercializing quantum computing hardware, and we’re proud to support these innovations.”

The Future of Quantum Photonics

As one of only a handful of companies worldwide developing this specialized photonics technology, Nu Quantum is positioned at the forefront of:

  • Quantum-secure communications
  • Advanced cryptography solutions
  • Next-generation quantum computing components

The investment marks a significant step toward making practical quantum technologies a commercial reality.
