How the Ocean Solutions Accelerator Is Driving Innovation for Our Seas
The Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) continues its mission to protect our planet’s waters through its Ocean Solutions Accelerator, now in its third wave. This latest cohort showcases groundbreaking startups addressing critical marine issues—from reef restoration to sustainable seafood tracking—proving that innovation can help heal our oceans.
The Challenge of Funding Ocean-Focused Startups
Operating in the blue economy isn’t easy. Many early-stage ocean tech companies struggle to secure funding, particularly those developing hardware-intensive solutions.
Craig Dudenhoffer, the accelerator’s co-founder, highlights this hurdle:
“Startups in this sector face high upfront costs, and only a fraction of applicants had secured substantial investments. Investors need to recognize the untapped potential in ocean conservation technologies.”
A Diverse, Global Cohort
Despite pandemic challenges, the 2020 cohort attracted a record number of applicants. Nine companies were selected, spanning six countries and tackling diverse marine issues:

- AKUA (U.S.) – Nutrient-rich kelp-based foods (jerky, burgers)
- ARC Marine (U.K.) – Sustainable “Reef Cubes” for habitat restoration
- Desolenator (Netherlands) – Solar-powered water desalination systems
- FlyWire (U.S.) – Digital catch monitoring for regulatory compliance
- microTERRA (Mexico) – Sustainable protein from aquafarm algae
- Oceanworks (U.S.) – Marketplace for recycled ocean plastics
- PlanetCare (Slovenia) – Microfiber filters for washing machines
- Trademodo (Canada) – Ethical seafood supply chain platform
The Virtual Advantage
SOA founder Daniela Fernandez notes that the shift to virtual programs has expanded opportunities for international participants:
“Virtual acceleration removes barriers for smaller startups. It’s more inclusive and flexible—a direction we were already heading.”
The Road Ahead
These startups will receive mentorship and resources, but also face the hard truths of balancing ethical missions with financial sustainability. Their November 5 demo day arrives at a pivotal time—showcasing how ocean tech can drive both ecological and economic value.
