Rocket Internet’s mobile payments startup Payleven has expanded its Android app availability beyond Germany, now launching in the UK, Italy, and Poland. The app is now accessible via Google Play Store in these markets, marking a strategic move to capture a wider merchant base.
Why Android Expansion Matters
While Payleven’s iOS app is already operational across all its active markets—including the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, and Brazil—the Android rollout required additional development due to hardware fragmentation.
A Payleven spokesperson explained:
“Android’s diverse hardware ecosystem demands meticulous refinement to ensure app reliability. Launching seamlessly across multiple countries is a complex but necessary process.”
Given Android’s dominance—70% of global smartphone shipments—this expansion is critical for Payleven’s growth, especially in Europe where Android holds over 70% market share in countries like Germany (per Kantar data).

- Device Compatibility: Optimized for popular models like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, SII, SIII, and HTC One X, S, and V.
- Payment Processing: Enables merchants to accept card payments via a smartphone or tablet-connected dongle.

Upcoming Chip & PIN Integration
Payleven also announced plans to launch a Chip & PIN dongle in early 2013 across all European markets. This upgrade addresses:
