Pixxel Makes History with India’s First Private Satellite Constellation
Bengaluru-based space tech startup Pixxel has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully launching the first three hyperspectral satellites of its Firefly constellation aboard a SpaceX rocket from California. This marks India’s entry into the private commercial satellite sector, signaling the country’s growing ambitions in space technology.

The startup plans to expand its constellation to 6 satellites by Q2 2025 and 18-24 satellites by 2026-2027, enabling daily global coverage (currently every 2-3 days).
Why Hyperspectral Imaging Matters
Unlike traditional satellites, hyperspectral imaging provides detailed chemical composition analysis, making it invaluable for:

Pixxel’s CTO Kshitij Khandelwal likened the technology to “hearing the individual notes in a musical composition“—revealing hidden patterns invisible to conventional sensors.

While compe*****s like Esper, Orbital Sidekick, and Wyvern operate in the hyperspectral space, Pixxel stands out with its unmatched 5-meter resolution and 150+ spectral bands.
The startup has raised $95 million from investors including Google, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Radical Ventures. Discussions are underway to integrate Pixxel’s data with Google Earth and other platforms.
India’s Support for Space Innovation
The Indian government has introduced several initiatives to boost the space sector, including:
- A $116 million VC fund for space startups
