Power plants typically have thousands of connected sensors, valves, and actuators that make them an attractive target for hackers. These cybercriminals often try to manipulate the physical infrastructure by tricking sensors into reporting that everything is working as usual while they increase pressure in a valve. Aperio’s tools can detect this activity because it doesn’t just look at data from connected sensors but also noise from existing ones.
Aperio uses machine learning techniques to create fingerprints of these sensors based on the noise they produce. When hackers forge sensor data, they cannot reproduce this noise, and the system alerts operators that something is wrong.
Unlike other solutions that require plants to change their existing setup, Aperio’s technology integrates seamlessly without requiring any changes in plant infrastructure. This advantage makes it easier for power plants to detect and mitigate potential intrusions while keeping operations running smoothly.
