Ampere, a new chip company led by former Intel president Renee James, has emerged from stealth with its innovative and highly efficient Armv8-A 64-bit server chip. This powerful product is designed specifically for hyperscale data centers. The custom core Armv8-A 64-bit server operates at up to 3.3 GHz with a memory capacity of 1TB, all within a power envelope of just 125 watts.
With its unique offering and the support of industry heavyweights, Ampere is backed by The Carlyle Group - a private equity firm Renee James worked for briefly after leaving Intel. While she hasn’t disclosed the funding amount, she assures that her company is well capitalized.
In addition to their first chip, Ampere has other products in development as well which will be unveiled later on. These upcoming chips are expected to further strengthen Ampere’s position in the market.
Renee James explains how she saw an opportunity for a new generation of more efficient and high-density chips needed for workloads moving to cloud environments. This motivated her to start a new chip company, as previous generations did not meet these requirements. The goal was to create a low-cost, high-performance product that could handle the growing demand in hyperscale data centers.
Currently, Ampere is sampling its custom microprocessor chip with customers and partners, which will go into production later this year. Renee James confirms that several major tech companies such as Microsoft, Lenovo, and Oracle are among their partner list but she hasn’t disclosed any customer names yet.
