Seattle’s election commission has accused Facebook (Reuters) of violating the city’s law requiring disclosure of campaign ad spending. The Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission’s executive director, Wayne Barnett, has said that Facebook must reveal advertising spending information for last year’s city elections or face fines amounting to up to $5,000 per ad purchase.

Facebook is under scrutiny due to its role in the Senate investigation into Russia’s interference with the presidential election. Last fall, the company promised transparency into political ads on its platform but has not yet met Seattle’s obligation for disclosure. However, Facebook vice president Will Castleberry told Reuters that the company supports transparency and had provided relevant information when requested by city officials.

The issue at hand is whether most local and federal laws governing political advertising are applicable to online platforms like Facebook, given that these laws were written before social media’s rise.
