Snapchat has officially launched its Footsteps feature to all iOS users, previously exclusive to Snapchat+ subscribers. The tool leverages Snap Map to visualize your travel history, showing where you’ve been and how much of the world you’ve explored.
How Footsteps Works
- Initial Setup: Your first Footsteps are generated from Snaps in your Memories, meaning past trips are automatically included.
- Ongoing Tracking: After setup, the feature relies solely on real-time location data (not Memories) to update your travel history.
- Ghost Mode Impact: Footsteps only works if Ghost Mode is disabled, as this setting blocks location sharing.
Key Features of Footsteps
- Exploration Metrics: See percentages like “30.4% of your city explored” or “5% of Paris visited.”
- Country Counter: Tracks the number of countries you’ve traveled to.
- Data Source: Accuracy depends on how often you save Snaps, as percentages are derived from Memories.
Privacy and Control
Your Footsteps are private by default—only visible to you. To manage the feature:
- Turn Off Footsteps:
- Go to Profile > Settings > Account Actions > Map.
- Toggle off “Save new Footsteps as my location updates on the map.”
- Clear History: Tap “Clear Footsteps History” in the same menu.
Why This Matters
Snapchat is doubling down on Snap Map as a competitive edge against Instagram and TikTok, neither of which offer comparable location-tracking tools (though Instagram is developing a Friends Map).
