Once upon a time, Spotify faced some complaints from songwriters about their service. These songwriters said that Spotify wasn’t giving them enough credit or money for using their music. So, Spotify decided to make things right with the world by introducing a new feature called ‘Songwriter Credits’. This special feature was first available on the Spotify desktop app.
Past events didn’t sit well with some songwriters and they even sued Spotify in 2016. But that wasn’t the only time Spotify had to pay millions for using music without permission. In 2017, another class action lawsuit was settled for more than $43 million.
Spotify has always wanted to make sure songwriters get the credit and money they deserve, but didn’t have enough data on who owns the songs. But now, Spotify is working with record label metadata, which might not be 100% accurate. They say this is only the beginning of making things better.
The company has also been trying new ways to improve attribution and solve the problem. In April 2017, they acquired a blockchain startup called Mediachain to help with this issue. But Spotify didn’t give any specific answers about using those technologies yet.
