Webedia Expands Its Digital Portfolio with OverBlog Acquisition
French online media giant Webedia has acquired the long-standing blogging platform OverBlog for “less than $6.9 million” (€5 million), according to reports from L’Opinion. This strategic move strengthens Webedia’s position in the digital content landscape.
A Decade-Long Journey for OverBlog
Founded in 2004, OverBlog emerged during a transformative era for the internet. As co-founder and CEO Frédéric Montagnon reflected on his blog, the digital world looked vastly different then:

- The Motorola Razr dominated the mobile market
- Google acquired Blogger, while WordPress began as an open-source project
Initially conceived as a blogging platform, OverBlog evolved into a media company, attracting investment from French television network TF1. In 2010, it merged with Ebuzzing, Wikio, and Nomao, shifting focus toward audience growth.
Strategic Realignment in the Digital Space
The acquisition comes as Ebuzzing (now merged with Teads) streamlines its operations to concentrate on advertising technology, with plans for a 2015 IPO. Selling OverBlog allows the company to maintain this focused direction.
For Webedia—often described as France’s answer to Gawker—the acquisition presents significant opportunities:
