  • Liquid Bismuth Lining: This molten metal shields the reactor while capturing heat for energy conversion. Century will eventually hold 1 metric ton of bismuth.
  • Electrode Durability: The team is optimizing materials to withstand extreme conditions, minimizing maintenance downtime.
  • Power Scaling: By 2025, Century aims to deliver 100 kilowatts per pulse, refining the system through iterative upgrades.

The Path Forward: Fusion’s Economic Imperative

CEO Benj Conway acknowledges the uncertainties but remains optimistic.

“Fusion must compete economically with other energy sources. If it’s too expensive, it won’t scale beyond a novelty,” he told TechCrunch.

Zap’s goal? A demonstration plant by 2030, with commercial deployment in the early 2030s. While plasma physics remains a challenge, Conway emphasizes that systems engineering and cost efficiency will determine fusion’s real-world impact.
