We have all been waiting for this day to arrive, as the newly redesigned Spot Mini from Boston Dynamics has finally mastered the art of opening doors.
The team behind the Big Dog continues to impress us with their viral robotic marketing skills, even after switching teams from Google to SoftBank. Just three months after unveiling a more streamlined version of its electronic Spot Mini, Boston Dynamics is back with another teaser video showcasing one robot equipped with a head-mounted arm effortlessly opening a door.
The video showcases impressive agility and balance as the robot swings open what appears to be a fairly heavy door. The maneuver is executed flawlessly by the bot, who maintains its stability throughout the process.
“Clever girl”, indeed. Despite this latest achievement, the teaser does not offer a great deal of insight into what’s new with the bumble bee-colored version of the company’s already announced robot.
In their previous video, it appeared that we were given a preview of a pair of Kinect-style 3D cameras that could provide more information on the robot’s navigation system. These advanced cameras seemed to hint at the possibility of an autonomous control system for the bots.
However, due to the short duration of the video, it is difficult to determine whether someone is controlling them out of frame.
