Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, has joined forces with digital cinema pioneer RED to create more affordable and compact 8K cameras. According to Chairman Terry Gou,[1] the goal is to reduce both the price and size of such camera systems by two-thirds. This collaboration comes at a time when small-factor 8K is becoming increasingly important in the consumer electronics market, with many flagship phones now capable of shooting high-quality 4K video.
However,[2] Gou did not comment on whether the image quality from these cameras would be worth the cost. In order to capture a decent image at such high resolution, you will need some serious glass in front of it - lenses for consumer-level products are simply not made with the precision necessary for capturing 8K video.
To add to this challenge,[3] cinema-grade glass starts at around $10,000. Furthermore, an 8K video may be up to 20 times larger than a 1080p one, meaning that you will need a whole lot of storage as well as a very fast and effective image processor.
Nonetheless,[4] more and cheaper cameras capable of shooting reasonable footage at 8K is great news for directors who want multiple angles, VFX artists who always want more pixels, operators whose backs are breaking from carrying heavy 8K gear, and producers who need to keep costs low. RED’s equipment has typically been too expensive for people not involved in filmmaking but considerably cheaper than its compe*****s such as Arri and Panavision.
It appears that Foxconn is looking to differentiate itself by partnering with RED on this project. The two companies are reportedly discussing the possibility of creating a joint venture or partnership to produce these cameras, which could potentially bring down costs even further.
