Finally, Uber is set to resume its ride-hailing services in Taiwan today after two months of suspension due to a partnership with licensed rental car companies. The move aims to avoid running afoul of local regulations again. This comes after the company faced backlash from local cab operators and the government, which levied fines against them for offering unlicensed transportation services.
In December, Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan finalized an amendment bill that increased the maximum financial penalty for illegal passenger transportation services from NT\(150,000 (about \)4,946) to NT\(25 million (\)824,500). This prompted Uber to suspend its services in Taiwan on February 10.
Uber will now partner with licensed rental car companies to resume serving riders in Taipei. The service is set to return to other cities soon. During the suspension of its ride-hailing service, Uber continued to operate its food delivery service, Uber Eats, in Taipei.
