From Music Industry Tool to Creator-Focused Payment Platform
Founded in 2015 by CEO Marcus Cobb and SVP of Growth Rachel Knepp, Mozaic initially focused on B2B solutions for the music industry. The pandemic prompted a strategic pivot in 2020 toward developing collaborative payment products, leveraging their expertise in music project management.
“We validated the market need by cold-calling 200 music distributors with a basic pitch deck,” Cobb told TechCrunch. “When 60 letters of intent came in within 30 days, we knew we were onto something.”
The company launched its beta version in January 2022, offering creators an alternative to traditional payment platforms like PayPal and Venmo that often fail to support international collaborators.
How Mozaic’s Payment Solution Works
Mozaic’s core offering includes:
- Smart API integration with platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Twitch
- JSON-based smart contracts (non-blockchain) that automate payments based on predefined rules
- Transparent reporting for all collaborators
- Global payment support, addressing cross-border payment challenges
Notable clients include Made By Us Music and Creative Space & Events, which have worked with major artists like 50 Cent and Rihanna.

The company has several exciting developments in the pipeline:
- Chrome extension launch (January 2024, invite-only)
- Mobile app release (Q1 2024)
- Business portal for enhanced reporting and revenue management
“Our Chrome extension will let creators add splits to anything as easily as tagging friends,” Cobb shared enthusiastically.

Larry Cheng of Volition Capital noted: “Payment splitting is a massive burden for creators, even established artists. As alternative creative verticals like YouTube Gaming grow, Mozaic is perfectly positioned to serve this expanding market.”
With the company already cashflow positive and plans to maintain profitability while expanding its team, Mozaic appears well-funded and strategically positioned to transform how creators manage collaborative payments.
