Telerivet Raises $1M to Bridge Communication Gaps in Developing Nations
SMS technology startup Telerivet has successfully secured $1 million in funding from Javelin Venture Partners and angel investors. The company specializes in providing affordable SMS gateway solutions and customized messaging platforms tailored for businesses and organizations across East Africa and other developing regions.
Addressing a Critical Communication Need
Co-founders Joshua Stern and Jesse Young identified this market opportunity while developing software for grassroots NGOs in Tanzania. They recognized that while most populations in these areas lack reliable internet access, nearly everyone owns an SMS-capable mobile phone. However, existing solutions like Twilio often don’t support local phone numbers in developing countries, leaving organizations with limited options beyond expensive shortcodes.
“Traditional communication platforms weren’t designed for these markets,” explains Stern. “We built Telerivet to empower organizations with affordable, accessible SMS solutions that work without internet connectivity.”
How Telerivet’s Innovative Platform Works
The platform combines two key components:
- Web-based messaging dashboard: Allows users to create and manage text campaigns, polls, and automated responses
- Android gateway app: Acts as a local SMS hub that forwards messages without requiring internet access
Key advantages of this approach:
- Works with basic feature phones
- Only requires a single Android device plugged into power
- Eliminates dependency on internet infrastructure
- Supports local phone numbers in developing markets
Real-World Impact and Adoption
Telerivet’s solutions are already transforming operations for various organizations:
- Logistics companies: Coordinating with field teams via SMS check-ins
- Microfinance institutions: Kiva.org uses the platform to communicate with borrowers in Kenya
- NGOs: Conducting health outreach and educational campaigns
Pricing starts at just $10/month, making it accessible even for small local businesses. The platform currently serves customers across multiple continents, including India, Paraguay, and Somalia.
Future Growth and Expansion
The new funding will accelerate Telerivet’s mission to:
- Scale platform capabilities
- Expand operations in East Africa
- Onboard more small and medium enterprises
“This investment validates our approach to solving real communication challenges in emerging markets,” says Young. “We’re just getting started in making mass mobile outreach accessible to every organization that needs it.”
