According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is rethinking its approach to releasing new updates for its mobile operating systems. Instead of adhering to strict deadlines and ticking all the boxes on a checklist, development teams will now be able to push back some features if they are not polished enough. The changes come in response to customers facing issues with bugs in previous iOS versions.
Developers will now have the opportunity to work on new features over a two-year period, which is expected to improve quality control. Apple has been focusing on stability for its upcoming iOS 12 update. Customers may still expect updates this Fall alongside new versions of watchOS and tvOS.
For iOS 12, customers can anticipate better parental controls with detailed stats for parents, more granular settings for ‘Do Not Disturb’, a new Stocks app, and the ability to invoke Siri in the iOS search bar. Rumored features for future updates include improved Animojis on the iPhone X, Face ID camera support for the iPad Pro, enhanced Animoji functionality during FaceTime calls, and sharing of augmented reality views with multiple users.
Apple is also reportedly working on a new update to Facetime that will finally allow users to call multiple people at once. Additionally, it is believed that users may be able to replace their face with Animojis during a FaceTime call and share the augmented reality view with other users.
One of the most exciting changes involves iOS apps running on macOS devices. Bloomberg suggests that third-party developers will soon be able to release iPhone and iPad apps on Mac computers, although specific details about how this integration would work are still unclear. It is possible that Apple plans to merge its iOS and Mac App Stores so users can download an app once and use it across multiple platforms.
With these changes, customers may not expect drastic changes with new major releases of the operating systems. However, they do expect their devices to become more reliable as mobile technology continues to evolve.
